Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, avoiding gaps or overlaps.

Begin installing turf along the longest straight  line, such as a driveway, sidewalk or edge of house.

Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, without stretching.

Avoid gaps and overlaps.

Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a sharp knife to trim the corners, ends, etc.  Sod is easiest to cut from the bottom, just fold where you want to cut and cut the roots to separate.  Avoid leaving small strips at outer edges as they have a tendency to dry out rather quickly.

On slopes, place the sod pieces across the slope so the water will not channel down the long seams.  Also if the slope is steep at all where it may wash or slide when watered, you may have to stake or pin the sod down.  We carry steel pins for this purpose available at a small fee, however wooden stakes can also be used made out of dowels or lathing, anything that can be made into a pin of sorts about 6 inches long, driven through the sod into the soil in at least 2 places along the length of the sod roll.

To avoid causing indentations or air pockets, avoid repeated walking or kneeling on the turf while it is being installed or just after it has been watered.

WATERING:  Nothing will have a greater impact on the overall success of your lawn installation as water.  Not just the amount of water but also the timing of the water.  Give your new lawn 1 inch of water within 1 hour of installation.  Most people do not realize that with a rotary impact type sprinkler (which is most recommended) that could take up to 6 hours of running time, depending on your water pressure.  We highly recommend you use a raingauge to determine how long to run your sprinkler. After the initial watering, water daily, the best time being early morning and if real hot, maybe again in the evening.  Temperature will determine how much water to put on, if real warm, apply about 3 tenths of an inch, if not so warm 1 to 2 tenths will work.  Most importantly, keep the sod moist until it is firmly rooted (about 2—3 weeks).  At that time less frequent and deeper watering should begin.  Weather conditions will dictate the amount and frequency of watering.  If the grass takes on a bluish-gray appearance, it needs water.  Also, water areas near buildings more often where reflected heat can dry turf.
